Mam Todos Santos New Testament (MAMSBG)
Overview
New Testament in Mam Todos Santos; mam (GT:mam:Mam)
The Mam Todos Santos New Testament, titled "Ac'aj Testamento" in the vernacular, is a translation in the Todos Santos Cuchumatan dialect of the Mam language, a member of the Mamean branch of the Mayan language family spoken in the highlands of western Guatemala [1]. The Todos Santos dialect is classified as part of Northern Mam, spoken primarily in the department of Huehuetenango, and is linguistically distinct from the Central (Comitancillo) and Southern dialects in its phonological features, including additional apical palato-alveolar consonants [2]. The New Testament was first published in 1997 by the International Bible Society, with a subsequent edition published in 2000 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. [3]. According to Joshua Project, the Mam of Todos Santos Cuchumatan number approximately 74,000 speakers, concentrated in the Huehuetenango department of Guatemala [4]. SIL International operated in Guatemala from 1952 to 2001, during which time it completed 24 New Testament translations in Mayan and other indigenous languages, contributing to the broader effort that included Mam dialect translations [5].
