Mada (Nigeria) 1999 Edition (MDAWBT)

Overview

The Mada (Nigeria) 1999 Edition, titled Rɛn kpan nyu suswɛ, is a New Testament translation in the Mada language (ISO 639-3: mda), published in 1999 through a collaboration between the Nigeria Bible Translation Trust (NBTT) and Wycliffe Bible Translators [1]. Mada is a Plateau language of the Benue-Congo branch within the Niger-Congo family, classified within the Ninzic subgroup alongside related languages such as Ninzo and Ce [2]. The language is spoken by approximately 219,000 people primarily in Akwanga and Kokona Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State, as well as Jema'a and Sanga Local Government Areas of southern Kaduna State in central Nigeria [3]. NBTT, headquartered in Jos, Plateau State, was formally established in 1976 to assume responsibility for Bible translation among Nigeria's minority language groups, growing out of earlier SIL work that began in 1963 [4]. Bible portions in Mada were completed by 1990, preceding the full New Testament in 1999 [3].
