Overview
This publication is a portion of Scripture (Genesis) in the Hassaniyya language (ISO 639-3: mey), written in Arabic script. Published by Pioneer Bible Translators in 2024, it represents an early step in bringing Scripture to Hassaniyya speakers. [1] Hassaniyya Arabic is a variety of Maghrebi Arabic spoken by approximately 3.5 million people in Mauritania, where it is the dominant language, as well as in Western Sahara, southern Morocco, Senegal, northwestern Mali, and parts of Algeria, Libya, and Niger. [2] The total number of Hassaniyya speakers worldwide is estimated at around 9.5 million. [2]
Language and People
Hassaniyya is the variety of Arabic originally spoken by the Beni Hassan Bedouin tribes, who extended their authority over much of Mauritania and the Western Sahara between the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. [2] In Mauritania, it functions as a language of national identity and is used alongside French and Standard Arabic. [2] Pioneer Bible Translators, based in Dallas, Texas, focuses on providing Scripture translations to language groups that do not yet have the Bible in their native language. [1]
