Mbembe Okohm (MFOEBL)

Overview

Mbembe Okohm is a collection of Old Testament portions in the Mbe language (ISO 639-3: mfo), containing 10 books: Genesis, Exodus, and Deuteronomy through 2 Kings. Published by The Seed Company in 2025, this translation serves the Mbe-speaking community of Cross River State, Nigeria. [1] Mbe is a Southern Bantoid language spoken by approximately 65,000 people in the Ogoja area of Cross River State. [2]

Language and People

Mbe is classified as the closest relative of the Ekoid family within the Southern Bantoid languages and is considered fairly close to the Bantu languages. [2] It is a tonal language with a typical Niger-Congo noun-class system. [2] Literacy and language documentation resources have been developed for the Mbe-speaking community, including orthography materials created in collaboration with the Nigeria Bible Translation Trust.
