The Isthmus Mixe New Testament produced by the Unión Nacional de Traductores Indígenas A.C. (UNTI) represents a 2022 audio edition of scripture for the Ayuk-speaking community of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, Mexico. Isthmus Mixe, also known as Lowland Mixe or Guichicovi Mixe, is a language of the Mixe-Zoque family spoken by approximately 22,500 people in the villages of the municipality of San Juan Guichicovi. [1] The text of the New Testament was first translated and published by Wycliffe Bible Translators in 1988; UNTI, a Mexican indigenous-led translation organization, produced the 2022 audio recording of the Matthew through John gospels, building on that foundational translation work. [2] This edition complements the earlier MIRTBL entry (the 1988 Wycliffe text) and extends scripture access through audio formats. Approximately 10 percent of Isthmus Mixe speakers are literate in their language, making audio scripture particularly essential for this community.
