Vame Luke (MLRWBT)

Overview

The Vame Luke, titled Vame Pəlasla Luka, is a translation of the Gospel of Luke in the Vame language (ISO 639-3: mlr), published in 2021 by Wycliffe Bible Translators [1]. Vame, also known as Pelasla or Ndreme, is an Afro-Asiatic language of the Biu-Mandara branch spoken by approximately 21,000 people in the Far North Region of Cameroon [2][3]. The Vame-Mbreme people inhabit the northeastern heights of the northern Mandara Mountains in the Mora arrondissement of the Mayo-Sava department, at elevations between 450 and 950 meters [4]. The language includes four main dialects: Demwa, Hurza, Mayo-Plata, and Mberem [2]. Bible portions in Vame were first completed in 2007, and a full New Testament was subsequently completed in 2022, following this Gospel of Luke publication [2]. SIL linguist William Kinnaird contributed to developing the Vame orthography through articles published in 2005-2006 [3].
