Mopán Maya New Testament 2004 Edition (MOPWBT)

Overview

The Mopan Maya New Testament 2004 Edition (vernacular title: Le'ec Ada' U T'an A Dios A Tumulbene) is a translation of the New Testament into Mopan Maya, a Yucatecan-branch Mayan language spoken by approximately 10,000-12,000 people in the Toledo District of Belize and the Peten Department of Guatemala [1][2]. Bible portions in Mopan Maya were first published in 1965, with the complete New Testament initially published in 1979; this 2004 edition represents a revised version of that translation, with copyright held by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. [3][4]. The Mopan people migrated to southern Belize from the Peten region of Guatemala beginning in 1886 to escape forced labor and taxation, founding the village of San Antonio in the Toledo District around 1889 [5]. The translation is produced and distributed through partnerships between Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc., the Digital Bible Society, the Bible League of Canada, and Open Doors International [6]. Audio recordings of the New Testament are also available through Faith Comes By Hearing [7].
