Mamasa New Testament (MQJWBT)

Overview

The New Testament in the Mamasa language of West Sulawesi, Indonesia, published in 2011 as the first Scripture translation in Mamasa. [1] The translation, titled Buku Masero: Pa'dandi Bakaru, was produced through a partnership between the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia) and Wycliffe Bible Translators. [2] The Mamasa people are an ethnic group related to the Toraja of South Sulawesi, and the majority practice Protestant Christianity, which was introduced by Dutch missionaries in the early 1900s. [3] The Mamasa language belongs to the Austronesian family and is closely related to the Sa'dan Toraja language. [3] With approximately 89,000 speakers, this New Testament provides the Mamasa Christian community with Scripture in their own language rather than relying on the national Indonesian Bible or the related Toraja translation.
