Maiwa New Testament (MTIWBT)

Overview

The Maiwa New Testament, titled "Gae Mataiwa" in the vernacular, is a translation of the New Testament into the Maiwa language, a Papuan language of the Trans-New Guinea family spoken in Milne Bay Province and Oro Province of Papua New Guinea [1][2]. The language has approximately 1,400 speakers and is classified as "developing" on the EGIDS scale, meaning it is in active use as a first language by all members of the ethnic community [1]. SIL linguists Takashi and Yaeko Nakamura conducted detailed phonological work on Maiwa, producing organized phonology data that supported the translation effort [3]. The translation was completed in 2011 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, with audio Bible recordings also made available through Faith Comes By Hearing [4].
