Totontepec Mixe New Testament (MTOWBT)

Overview

The Totontepec Mixe New Testament was published in 1989 (listed as 1990 in some SIL records) by La Liga Bíblica Internacional, with the translation produced through the work of SIL International (Instituto Lingüístico de Verano) and Wycliffe Bible Translators [1]. SIL linguists Alvin and Louise C. Schoenhals carried out foundational linguistic work on the Totontepec Mixe language beginning in the 1960s, producing a grammar, orthography, and the bilingual "Vocabulario mixe de Totontepec" dictionary, all of which laid the groundwork for Scripture translation [2][3]. Willard and Julia Dieterman Van Haitsma also contributed to Mixe language research through SIL, publishing a hierarchical sketch of the Mixe language as spoken in San José El Paraíso [4]. Totontepec Mixe (also called Ayöök, Mixe Alto del Norte, or Northwestern Mixe) is a Mixe-Zoque language spoken in the municipality of Totontepec Villa de Morelos in the Sierra Mixe region of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico [5].
