Mündü 2005 Edition (MUHWBT)
Overview
The Mundu 2005 Edition, titled "To Ngu Muru ka Me bete Gina Ngu," is a New Testament translation with additional portions in the Mundu language, a Ubangian language spoken by the Mundu people of South Sudan and the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo [1][2]. The Mundu, numbering approximately 22,000 in South Sudan with an additional 8,600 in the DRC, inhabit the Maridi district of Western Equatoria State and parts of Central Equatoria State [2]. According to oral tradition, the Mundu migrated eastward from West Africa, a connection supported by the close linguistic relationship between Mundu and certain West African languages [3]. Although the first missionaries arrived among the Mundu in the 1920s, they worked only in trade languages rather than the Mundu heart language [3]. SIL began work in South Sudan in the 1970s, partnering with the Ministry of Education to establish the Institute of Regional Languages in Maridi, and the Mundu community was among twelve language groups that received New Testaments with SIL's technical support [4]. Published in 2005 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, this translation builds on earlier literacy efforts that produced 16 readers in the Mundu language between 1984 and 2000 [1].
