Murrinhpatha Bible (MWF2018)

Overview

The Murrinhpatha Bible is a collection of Scripture portions in the Murrinh-Patha language (ISO 639-3: mwf), published by Bible Society Australia with copyright spanning 2018-2025. [1] It contains 13 books including Genesis, Psalms, Proverbs, Jonah, the four Gospels (Matthew-John), 1-2 Thessalonians, James, 1 John, and Revelation. The digital edition reflects the text prepared for the 2021 printed edition. [2] The translation was produced through collaboration between members of the Australian Society for Indigenous Languages (AuSIL), Bible Society Australia staff, and Murrinh-Patha community members. [2]

Language and People

Murrinh-Patha is spoken by over 2,500 people in the region of Wadeye (formerly Port Keats) in the Northern Territory of Australia. [2] It is one of Australia's fastest-growing Aboriginal languages and is notably spoken not only by the Murrinh-Patha people but also by several other people groups in the area whose own languages are declining or extinct. [2] The language is taught in schools, and all locals are encouraged to learn it due to its wide range of use. [2] It is one of the few Aboriginal Australian languages that is not endangered. [2]

Earlier portions of Scripture in Murrinh-Patha were published between 1982 and 1990. [2] The current edition was prepared jointly by AuSIL and Bible Society Australia and is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-No Derivatives 4.0 license. [1]
