Mentawai Today's Mentawai Version, 1993 (MWVLAI)

Overview

Today's Mentawai Version is a New Testament translation in the Mentawai language, published in 1993 by the Indonesian Bible Society (Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia, LAI) in Jakarta. The Mentawai people are an Austronesian ethnic group inhabiting the Mentawai Islands -- principally Siberut, Sipura, North Pagai, and South Pagai -- located approximately 150 kilometers off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. [1] Christianity was introduced to the Mentawai Islands by Protestant missionaries beginning in 1901, when August Lett became the first missionary to arrive on the south coast of North Pagai. [1] The Protestant Christian Church in Mentawai (Gereja Kristen Protestan di Mentawai, GKPM), which traces its roots to the Rhenish Mission, was founded in 1916 and became independent in 1978. [2] Today the GKPM has approximately 35,000 members, and the Mentawai-language Bible serves congregations across the island chain. [2] The Indonesian Bible Society has continued distribution efforts, delivering Bibles to GKPM churches in villages across Siberut and the other islands. [3]
