The Bible in Erzya (MYVIBT)

Overview

The earliest Scripture in the Erzya language dates to 1821, when the Gospels were published under the auspices of the Russian Bible Society, with the remainder of the New Testament following in 1827. [1] [2] These early translations were among the first printed texts in Erzya, and the 1821 Gospel text served as the basis for the first Erzya grammar, written by Hans Conon von der Gabelentz and published in 1838-39. [2] However, the early translations did not receive wide distribution and were considered to be of limited quality. [2] In the modern era, the Institute for Bible Translation published new translations of the Psalms in 2011 and the New Testament (Од Вейсэньлув) in 2013, along with a selection of Old Testament wisdom books in 2020. [3] Erzya is a Mordvinic language of the Uralic family, spoken by approximately 300,000 people primarily in the Republic of Mordovia and adjacent regions of Russia.
