Deg 1990 Edition (MZWNVS)

Overview

The Deg 1990 Edition is an early Scripture translation in the Deg language (also known as Mo), a Gur-Grussi language spoken by approximately 59,000 people in the Kintampo District of Brong Ahafo and Bole District of Northern Region, Ghana [1]. Translation work in the Deg language began in 1981 when Marjorie Crouch and Pat Hebert, linguists with the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (GILLBT), received permission from the Omanhene of the Mo traditional area to settle in New Longoro and begin linguistic analysis [2]. By 1983, the language had been analyzed and literacy programs alongside New Testament translation commenced, culminating in the completion and dedication of the Deg New Testament in 1991 [2]. GILLBT, which grew out of the partnership between Wycliffe Bible Translators and the University of Ghana's Institute of African Studies beginning in 1962, subsequently continued Old Testament translation work, and the complete Deg Bible was dedicated on March 18, 2016, at New Longoro as part of a remarkable period in which GILLBT completed five full Bibles in five months [2][3]. The Deg language has two mutually intelligible dialects, Longoro and Mangom, with the Bible translated into the Longoro dialect spoken by the majority of the community [1].
