Language and People
Nalik is a member of the New Ireland group of Austronesian languages, with a subject-verb-object phrase structure. [2] Its speakers are based in approximately 14 villages on the east coast and 3 on the west coast of the northern part of New Ireland, located 70-90 kilometres from the provincial capital, Kavieng. [2][3] A significant number of Nalik speakers also live outside the traditional language area, in Kavieng, Port Moresby, and elsewhere. [2] The language faces pressure from English and Tok Pisin, which are becoming increasingly dominant among the Nalik-speaking population. [2]
