Ɛrgɨ Ɓani — Niellim New Testament (Chad)

Overview

Ɛrgɨ Ɓani ("Good News" or "New Testament" in Niellim) is the complete New Testament (27 books) in the Niellim (lwaà) language of south-central Chad, published by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. in 2023 and available via YouVersion/Bible.com (ID 3729). The community's autonym lwaà (note lowercase, reflecting the community's own orthographic convention for their language name) differs from the external scholarly designation Niellim. The vernacular title Ɛrgɨ Ɓani uses specialized characters (ɛ = open-mid front vowel, ɨ = close central unrounded vowel, Ɓ = implosive bilabial) characteristic of the phonologically complex Central Sudanic language family of the Chad Basin. The 2023 NT completion marks a significant milestone for this community.

Language and People

Niellim (ISO 639-3: nie; autonym: lwaà) is a Nilo-Saharan language: Nilo-Saharan → Central Sudanic branch (Bagirmi or Sara-Bongo-Bagirmi group). The Central Sudanic branch is one of the major branches of Nilo-Saharan, containing the Sara language cluster of southern Chad and CAR (Sara, Nar, Gulay, Mbay, Kaba, etc.) and the Bagirmi languages of central Chad. Niellim is a small Central Sudanic language located in the contact zone between the Sara cluster and the Bagirmi group. Central Sudanic languages are known for their complex tonal and phonemic inventories, including implosive consonants (Ɓ) and central vowels (ɨ).

The Niellim community inhabits:

  • South-central Chad — in the region between the Chari (Shari) River and Moyen-Chari / Guéra zone
  • The broader Shari/Chad Basin highland fringe south of N'Djamena

Estimated speakers: small to medium Central Sudanic community; precise recent data is limited.

Cultural Context

South-central Chad is the homeland of the Sara-speaking peoples, who constitute Chad's largest ethnolinguistic group (~25% of the national population). Niellim speakers belong to the broader Central Sudanic zone of this region, which has historically been the area of most active Christian mission work in Chad (by French-speaking Catholic and Protestant missions). Chad's south is predominantly Christian and animist, contrasting with the Muslim-majority north and center. Wycliffe Bible Translators has been active in Chad since the mid-20th century, producing translations for multiple Central Sudanic and other Chadian languages. The 2023 Niellim NT represents a recent addition to Chadian scripture resources.
