Overview
Nsasana Ŋwed Idem-Mbubod is the Gospel of Luke in the Nkari language of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, published by Beyond Translation under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license and available via YouVersion/Bible.com (ID 4300; abbreviation: NKZ). Bible portions were completed in 2024. This is the first available scripture in Nkari, produced through Beyond Translation's Church-Centric Bible Translation (CCBT) model in which local church communities serve as translators and owners of the text. Nkari is one of four dialects of the Ibuoro language cluster, each with its own ISO code, reflecting the high linguistic diversity of southeastern Nigeria's Cross River region.
Language and People
Nkari (ISO 639-3: nkz) is a Niger-Congo language: Niger-Congo → Atlantic-Congo → Volta-Congo → Benue-Congo → Cross River → Lower Cross River → Ibibio-Efik cluster. It is one of four dialects in the Ibuoro language cluster — the others being Ibuoro proper (ibr), Ito (itw), and Itu Mbon Uzo (itm); each has sufficient distinctiveness to receive its own ISO code. Nkari's closest relatives are Ibibio, Efik, and Annang — all part of Nigeria's fifth-largest language family by speaker population.
The Nkari community is located in Itu Local Government Area area, Akwa Ibom State, southeastern Nigeria — in the densely multilingual Lower Cross River basin.
Estimated speakers: approximately 12,000 (Joshua Project); all Ibuoro dialects combined: ~20,000 (Ethnologue).
Cultural Context
The Lower Cross River region is one of the world's most linguistically diverse zones, with dozens of distinct languages in a compact area. The Ibibio-Efik cluster's long history of Christian mission — beginning with the Calabar Mission of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland (founded 1846) and continuing through the completion of the Efik Bible in 1868 — created a tradition of heart-language literacy across southeastern Nigeria. Joshua Project classifies Nkari at Progress Scale Level 5 (significantly reached, evangelicals >10% of population) — the highest reached level, reflecting the pervasive Christian influence in Akwa Ibom State.
