Norweigen (NBS) Det Norsk Bibelselskap (NORNBS)

Overview

The NORNBS is the 1930 Bokmal Bible translation published by Det Norske Bibelselskap (the Norwegian Bible Society), commonly known as "folkebibelen" (the people's Bible) [1][2]. The Norwegian Bible Society, founded on 26 May 1816, is the oldest interchurch organization in Norway [3]. This 1930 edition is a revised compilation: the Old Testament is based on the first Bokmal translation made directly from Hebrew, published in 1891, and the New Testament draws on a translation from the original Greek published in 1904 [1][4]. The 1930 revision incorporated major Norwegian spelling reforms from the early twentieth century, giving both Testaments a more unified Norwegian expression [1]. The revision work was led by professors Bang and Odland, with significant contributions from Alexander Seippel, who had also worked extensively on translating the Bible into Nynorsk [1][4]. The translation follows a concordant approach, staying close to the original meaning of words in the source languages [1]. The 1930 edition served as the standard Norwegian Bible for over forty years and remains in print today [1][2]. It was eventually superseded for official church use by a new translation published by the Norwegian Bible Society in 1978, though many Norwegian readers continue to prefer the 1930 text [4]. The text is now in the public domain.
