Ewage-Notu New Testament (NOUWBT)

Overview

The Ewage-Notu New Testament, titled "Binga Ewamei Iesu Keriso Da Jawo Da," was published in 1987 by Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] Ewage-Notu is a Papuan language of the Binanderean family within the Trans-New Guinea phylum, spoken in Oro Province (formerly Northern Province) in the "tail" of Papua New Guinea. [2] The language has two main dialects -- Ewage, spoken by coastal communities, and Notu -- and is also known by the alternate names Gona, Okeina, and Yega. [3] Bible portions in Ewage-Notu were first produced between 1930 and 1952, reflecting early mission contact in the area that dates back to 1922, when missionaries arrived in the Gona area. [2][3] The 1987 New Testament represents the culmination of decades of translation work for this language community of approximately 40,000 speakers. [3]
