South Tairora New Testament (OMWWBT)

Overview

The South Tairora New Testament, titled "Qaraakya Qua Timwatora," was published in 2000 by Wycliffe Bible Translators. South Tairora (also known as Omwunra-Toqura) is a Trans-New Guinea language spoken by approximately 13,000 people in the Kainantu and Obura-Wonenara districts of Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea [1][2]. The translation was produced by Alex Vincent, who together with his wife Lois spent nearly 50 years working among the Tairora people beginning in 1957 under the auspices of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) [3]. Alex Vincent initially completed the North Tairora New Testament (published 1979), and subsequently translated the New Testament into the South Tairora dialect with the assistance of Taiho Nraaqakyaqa, a local Tairora man [3]. South Tairora has several recognized dialects including Aatasaara, Haaviqinra-Oraura, Omwunra-Toqura, Vaira-Ntosara, Veqaura, and Vinaata-Konkompira, and separate Scripture editions have been produced for the Aatasara and Veqaura dialects [1].
