Ono New Testament (ONSONT)

Overview

The Ono New Testament, titled "Waom Yesu Wane Sigi Maep Don," was published in 1991 by the Bible Society of Papua New Guinea. Ono is a Trans-New Guinea language belonging to the western Huon subgroup of the Finisterre-Huon branch, spoken by approximately 10,000 people in 26 villages along the eastern slopes of the Cromwell Mountains in the Finschhafen District of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea [1][2]. The earliest linguistic documentation of Ono dates to the early twentieth century, when German missionary Heinrich Wacke conducted fieldwork among Ono speakers near Kalasa and published a detailed grammatical study in 1930-1931 [1]. The language has two main dialects, Amugen and Ziwe, with minor lexical variations that do not impede mutual comprehension [1]. Bible portions in Ono were first produced in 1980, and the Ono people group is now estimated at approximately 16,000 individuals [2].
