Northern Paiute New Testament (PAONAB)

Overview

The Northern Paiute New Testament, titled Te Naa Besa Unnepu, was published in 2012 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, building on earlier work that produced Bible portions beginning in 1985 through Bible League International. [1] [2] Northern Paiute (also known as Paviotso or Numu) is a Western Numic language of the Uto-Aztecan family, spoken across communities in Nevada, Oregon, California, and Idaho in the western United States. [3] The language is severely endangered, with an estimated 700 speakers remaining. This translation represents an important effort in Scripture access and language preservation for a widely dispersed indigenous people, with the Numu language now also the subject of academic documentation projects at institutions including Boise State University and the University of Nevada, Reno.
