Parkwa 1992 Edition (PBIWYI)

Overview

The Parkwa 1992 Edition is the first Bible translation in the Parkwa language, also known as Podoko, a Chadic language spoken in the Far North Region of Cameroon [1]. The Podoko people inhabit the mountainous massifs west and southwest of Mora, at elevations of 600-700 meters, across the cantons of Podoko-Nord, Podoko-Centre, and Podoko-South, one of the most densely populated areas of the northern Mandara Mountains [2]. Linguistic documentation of Parkwa by SIL International has been extensive, including a dictionary compiled by Ndoula Lagona and Elizabeth Jarvis beginning in 1992 and an earlier lexicon produced in 1986 by Zagba Yakouba, Jarvis, and Siddi Silas [3]. The Podoko people are classified within the Afro-Asiatic language family under the Biu-Mandara branch, and their four main clans -- Moukoulehe, Oudjila, Tala Dabara, and Tala Sale -- trace diverse origins across the Mandara region [2]. This New Testament translation, published by Wycliffe Bible Translators, represents the first Scripture portion made available in the Parkwa language.
