Yine New Testament (PIBWBT)

Overview

The Yine New Testament, titled Gerotu Tokanchi Gipiratkaluru, was published in 2008 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, building on earlier Scripture work in the language dating from 1960 and 2002. [1] Yine (also known as Piro) is an Arawakan language spoken by approximately 3,000-4,000 people in Peru's Ucayali, Cusco, and Madre de Dios departments, along the Ucayali and Madre de Dios rivers. [2] SIL linguist Esther Matteson conducted foundational linguistic work on the Yine language beginning in the 1950s, publishing phonological studies (1954, 1958) and a comprehensive grammar in 1965, while Joyce Nies compiled a Piro dictionary published by the Ministerio de Educacion and the Instituto Linguistico de Verano (SIL) in 1986. [3] [4] The Yine people maintain comparatively high literacy rates, and the language is taught alongside Spanish in some Yine schools. [2]
