Piapoco New Testament (PIOWBT)
Overview
The Piapoco New Testament, titled El Nuevo Testamento de nuestro Señor Jesucristo en el idioma piapoco, was first published in 1986 by the International Bible Society, with a second edition published in 2009 by Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] [2] Piapoco is a Northern Arawakan language spoken by approximately 15,000 people in Colombia along the Vichada and Guaviare rivers in the departments of Guainía and Vichada, with an additional 3,300 speakers in Venezuela. [3] The translation was the work of Deloris Klumpp and her husband James Klumpp, who served with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Colombia beginning in 1981, translating the New Testament and hymn books into the Piapoco language. [4] Deloris Klumpp also produced extensive linguistic documentation of Piapoco, including a grammar and vocabulary compiled during the 1960s-1990s. [5]
