Luritja New Testament (PIUBSA)

Overview

The Luritja Shorter Bible (Katujaku Wangka Ngaatja Irrititja An Ngantitja Tjungu Ngarrinyi) was published by Bible Society Australia in 2006 and contains the full New Testament along with selected portions of the Old Testament. [1] Luritja is a Western Desert language spoken by approximately 1,600 people as a first language in the Papunya and Kintore region of the Northern Territory, approximately 240 kilometers northwest of Alice Springs, extending to Kiwirrkura in Western Australia. [2] The term "Luritja" likely derives from an Arrernte word meaning "foreigner," reflecting the eastward migration of these speakers from their original Western Australian territories into Arrernte-speaking lands. [2] Bible Society translation work in Pintupi-Luritja dates from at least 1961, with papers and correspondence relating to the translation spanning from January 1961 to May 1987. [3]
