Palikúr New Testament (PLUWBT)
Overview
Uhokri Gannasan is the New Testament in the Palikúr language (also known as Pa'ikwaki or Parikwene), an Arawakan language spoken by approximately 1,900 people in the riverine areas of the Brazilian state of Amapa and in French Guiana, particularly along the Urukaua River [1][2]. The translation was produced by Harold and Diana Green, missionary linguists with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), who arrived in the Palikur village of Kumene on the Urukaua in 1965 and lived among the Palikur people for approximately eleven years while learning the language and beginning the translation work [1][2]. Beyond the New Testament, the Greens produced a total of 52 publications in Palikur, including primers, a dictionary (Yuwit kawihka dicionario Palikur-Portugues), story collections, and 14 church-oriented titles [1]. Diana Green also published scholarly linguistic work on the Palikur numerical system in the Bulletin of the Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi [1]. The completed New Testament was published in 1982 by Livraria Crista Unida in Brasilia in collaboration with Liga Biblica do Brasil [3].
