Overview

The Brooke's Point Palawano 2013 Edition, titled "Bagung Pinegsulutan et Empu'" in the vernacular, is a New Testament translation with Genesis and Exodus in the Brooke's Point Palawano language of the Philippines [1]. The translation was the culmination of a 30-year project led by translators Bill and Donna Davis, working with a Palawano translation team and 11 translation consultants [2]. Brooke's Point Palawano is an Austronesian language of the Palawanic branch, spoken by approximately 14,400 people in the southeast of Palawan island, primarily in the municipalities of Brooke's Point and Bataraza [3][4]. The Palawano are one of several indigenous ethnolinguistic subgroups of Palawan, and the Brooke's Point community has had relatively more contact with lowland Filipino communities compared to other Palawano groups [4]. A dedication ceremony was held in early 2014 during the rainy season, at which community members celebrated receiving Scripture in their own language, including a 13-year-old named Maritess who recited over 30 memorized New Testament verses without error [2]. SIL International conducted foundational linguistic research on Brooke's Point Palawano, including phonemic analysis and grammar studies published in 1994 [5].
