The Bible in Poqomchi (POHBSG)

Overview

The Bible in Poqomchi' (titled Bíblia Poqomchí orthografía reformada) is a 2018 edition containing the New Testament in the Poqomchi' language, a Mayan language spoken in the departments of Alta Verapaz and Baja Verapaz in Guatemala. [1] SIL International began linguistic and translation work among Mayan language communities in Guatemala in 1952, completing 24 New Testament translations before closing its Guatemala branch office in 2001. [2] After SIL's departure, local organizations such as the Sociedad Bíblica de Guatemala and the Asociación Evangélica de las Comunidades Mayas (AECM) continued Bible translation work in Mayan languages, including further Scripture portions in Poqomchi'. [2] The 2018 edition uses a reformed orthography consistent with the standardized Mayan script conventions adopted in Guatemala.
