The New Testament and Psalms in the Pohnpeian language (PONPSA)

Overview

The New Testament and Psalms in the Pohnpeian language (PONPSA) is the 2006 Protestant edition published by the Bible Society in the South Pacific, using the modern Pohnpeian orthography. Christian missionary work on Pohnpei (formerly Ponape) dates to 1852, when Dr. Luther H. Gulick and Albert A. Sturges established the first mission station under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. [1] Early Scripture translations into Pohnpeian, including portions of Luke and John, were produced in the 1850s, possibly by missionaries such as Hiram Bingham II or Louisa Mitchell Lewis Gulick. [1] The Pohnpeian writing system was later developed by German missionaries using the Latin alphabet. [2] The 2006 edition represents a modern revision using the current Pohnpeian orthography, replacing an older translation that used a different alphabet system. [3]
