Ashéninka Perené (PRQWBT)

Overview

The Ashéninka Perené Bible contains the New Testament with Old Testament portions in the Ashéninka Perené language, an Arawak language spoken by approximately 5,500 people in the Perené River valley of the Junín region in eastern Peru [1][2]. The translation was first published in 2004 by Wycliffe Bible Translators and later updated with a 2015 copyright [3]. Ashéninka Perené is one of several closely related Campan-branch Arawak varieties formerly grouped under the broader term "Campa," which speakers consider derogatory [4]. The language is classified as endangered, with all adults in the ethnic community using it as a first language but declining use among younger speakers [1]. SIL International was involved in documenting the language, including development of an orthography and grammatical descriptions, alongside the translation work [5].
