Today's Dari Version (PRSTDV)

Overview

Today's Dari Version (TDV08) is the first complete Bible published in Dari, the Afghan variety of Persian, released in 2008 by the United Bible Societies. Dari is the primary lingua franca of Afghanistan, distinct from Iranian Persian in vocabulary and pronunciation. Scripture portions in Dari were first published in 1974, and the complete New Testament was published for the first time in 1982 by the Pakistan Bible Society in Lahore. [1] The New Testament was translated by Zia Nodrat, an Afghan convert to Christianity, working from Iranian Persian, English, and German versions. [1] A third edition of the New Testament was published by Cambridge University Press in 1989. [1] Nodrat was working on a Dari translation of the Old Testament when he disappeared under mysterious circumstances. [1][2] The complete Bible, including the Old Testament, was finally published in 2008 as "Today's Dari Version" after years of work by scholars and linguists. [3] A revised edition (TDV22) of the New Testament was released in 2022, featuring improved fluency in modern Dari. [3]
