Gapapaiwa New Testament (PWGWBT)

Overview

The Gapapaiwa New Testament, titled "God Vonana Vovokaravina," was published in 2009 in the Gapa dialect of the Gapapaiwa language, an Austronesian language of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea [1][2]. The translation was produced by the Gapapaiwa Translation Team with linguistic support from SIL members Ed and Catherine McGuckin, who conducted extensive fieldwork on the language beginning in the 1980s, producing grammar essentials, organized phonology data, and field notes [3][4]. Catherine McGuckin published a grammatical description of Gapapaiwa in 2002 [4]. In SIL research on translating divine names in Papua New Guinea, the Gapapaiwa rendering of YHWH as "Miimiituwa" was noted as a significant example of culturally grounded translation [5].
