Overview

This is the New Testament in the West Central (Cantel) dialect of K'iche', published in the new standardized orthography developed by the Academia de Lenguas Mayas de Guatemala (ALMG), which was founded in 1986 to standardize writing systems for Guatemala's Mayan languages [1]. K'iche' is the second most widely spoken language in Guatemala after Spanish, with over one million speakers concentrated in the western highlands [2]. The Cantel dialect is spoken in the municipality of Cantel in the Quetzaltenango department, and is linguistically distinctive for having reduced its vowel system compared to other K'iche' varieties [2]. The translation, titled Ru Loq' Pixab' Ri Dios ("The Sacred Word of God"), was first published in 1997 and reissued in 2011 by Wycliffe Bible Translators [3]. A companion edition in the traditional orthography was published simultaneously (see QUCXIBS). SIL International worked in Guatemala from 1952 to 2001, completing 24 New Testament translations during that period [4].
