Ayacucho Quechua Bible (QUYWBT)
Overview
The Ayacucho Quechua Bible, known as Ch'uya Qillqa, is a complete Bible translation into Ayacucho Quechua (also called Chanka Quechua), first published in 1987. [1] [2] It was the first complete Bible translation into any Quechua variety in Peru, translated from the original Hebrew and Greek by Romulo Saune Quicana (1953-1992), a Quechua pastor from a village near Ayacucho. [1] [2] Saune worked in cooperation with Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Presbyterian Church over many years to complete the translation, and traveled to Israel to study Hebrew for the Old Testament work. [3] The Bible was published by Sociedades Biblicas Unidas (United Bible Societies) in Lima, and within a short time forty thousand copies were sold. [3]
Translation History
Romulo Saune Quicana dedicated his life to bringing the complete Bible to the Quechua people. The translation task was completed on September 3, 1987, and was published by the Peruvian Bible Society. [1] A second PDF edition was released in 2011 by Sociedad Biblica Peruana. [1] In July 1992, Saune accepted the first Religious Liberty Award from the World Evangelical Fellowship in Manila, Philippines, recognizing his work in Bible translation through Wycliffe Bible Translators and the United Bible Society, as well as his leadership of TAWA, an indigenous ministry to the Quechua people. [3] Tragically, on September 5, 1992, Saune was murdered by Shining Path terrorists who set up a roadblock while he and family members were traveling from a village near Ayacucho. [3]
