Panao Huánuco Quechua New Testament (QXHWBT)

Overview

The Panao Huánuco Quechua New Testament, titled Mushug Testamento, was published in 2009 by Wycliffe Bible Translators through Bible League International [1][2]. The translation resulted from work by the Instituto Lingüístico de Verano (ILV/SIL), which began linguistic and community development activities among the Quechua speakers of the Pachitea province in 1984 [3]. Panao Huánuco Quechua is spoken by approximately 50,000 people in the Huánuco department, primarily in the districts of Molinos, Panao, Chaglla, and Umari within Pachitea province, with some speakers in jungle communities of Leoncio Prado province due to recent migrations [3]. Alongside the Bible translation, ILV produced radio programs featuring readings of Scripture portions and Quechua music, as well as literacy instruction books and reading materials for the community [3]. The language is classified as moribund, making this translation an important resource for language preservation as well as spiritual use [4].
