Caló Gospel of Luke 1872 (RMQLUK)

Overview

A revised edition of the Gospel of Luke in Calo, the Para-Romani language of the Gitano communities of Spain and Portugal, published in 1872 by the British and Foreign Bible Society. [1] The original translation, titled Embeo e Majaro Lucas, was made in 1836-1837 by George Borrow (1803-1881), a BFBS agent who traveled extensively in Spain distributing scriptures. [2] First printed in Madrid in 1837 in an edition of 500 copies, it was the first book of the Bible ever translated into any Romani language, and reportedly the first book ever published in any Romani variety. [3] The 1872 revision, titled Criscote e Majaro Lucas, was printed in London and represents a revised text of Borrow's original work. [1] Borrow documented his experiences distributing the Calo gospel and other scriptures in Spain in his celebrated book The Bible in Spain (1843). [2] He also published The Zincali (1841), a study of the Gitano people, their customs, and their language. [2]
