Vlax Romani Bible (RMYVRB)

Overview

The Vlax Romani Bible is a 2021 publication containing portions of Scripture (5 books) in Vlax Romani as spoken by the Roma community in Chile. The language variant is identified as "Romani: Vlax chileana," reflecting the distinct Chilean variety of Vlax Romani. [1] The Roma population in Chile is estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 people, predominantly belonging to the Xoraxane (also spelled Xoraxaj or Xoraxane Rroma), a group historically associated with Muslim Roma communities in the Ottoman Empire. [2] Roma began arriving in South America from Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with earlier waves of migration dating back to the colonial period. [3] The Chilean Xoraxane maintain a semi-nomadic lifestyle, travelling between cities and living in small communities, and they have been working to establish their own cultural organizations. [3] Vlax Romani dialects are the dominant Romani language varieties in South America. [2]
