Overview

This is a translation of the Gospel of Mark into the Sam language (also known as Songum or Songumsam), published in 2020 by Wycliffe Bible Translators. Sam is a Trans-New Guinea language spoken in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, in the villages of Songum, Buan, and Wongbe in the Astrolabe Bay Rural Local-Level Government area [1][2]. The language has approximately 1,600-1,700 speakers among the Songum people [1][2]. Bible portions in Sam were developed between 2005 and 2020, with this Gospel of Mark representing a key Scripture resource for the community [1].

Sam (ISO 639-3: snx) is a Madang language classified under Trans-New Guinea, Madang, Rai Coast, Mindjim [2]. It is spoken as a first language by all members of the ethnic community [2].
