Supyire Sénoufo New Testament (SPPTBL)
Overview
The Supyire Senoufo New Testament, titled "Kile Jwumpe Semeni Jwumpe Nintanmpe" in the vernacular, is a translation of the New Testament into the Supyire language of southeastern Mali. [1] The translation was completed and copyrighted in 2008 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, Inc. [1] Supyire is a Senufo language of the Niger-Congo family, spoken primarily in the Sikasso Region of Mali and in adjoining areas of Ivory Coast. [2] Work on Old Testament portions has continued since the initial New Testament publication, with additional Old Testament text copyrighted between 2008 and 2022. [1] The translation is available digitally through Bible.com and as a mobile app with synchronized audio. [3]
Language and People
Supyire Senoufo (ISO 639-3: spp) is spoken by approximately 364,000 people, primarily in the Sikasso Region of southeastern Mali and in neighboring areas of Ivory Coast, where it is known as Shempire or Syenpire. [2] [4] The language belongs to the Northern Senufo branch of the Niger-Congo family, classified alongside Sucite and Mamara (Minyanka) in the Suppire-Mamara group. [4] The Supyire writing system uses the Latin script with an alphabet devised by the Direction nationale d'alphabetisation fonctionnelle et de linguistique appliquee (DNAFLA) in collaboration with SIL. It is a tonal language with four tones: high (marked with acute accent), middle (unmarked), low (grave accent), and falling (circumflex). [5] [Glottolog: supy1237]
