Sranan New Testament (SRNBSS)

Overview

The New Testament in Sranan Tongo ("Nyun Testamenti"), published in 2002 by the Suriname Bible Society (Stichting Surinaams Bijbelgenootschap) in partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] Sranan Tongo is an English-based creole language that serves as the lingua franca of Suriname. Bible translation into Sranan has a long history: Moravian missionaries produced the earliest Sranan Scripture translations in the late eighteenth century, with C.L. Schumann completing manuscript New Testament translations in 1782-1783. [2] The first printed Sranan Gospel (Luke) appeared in 1829. [2] The Moravian Church developed a standardized literary form of Sranan, sometimes called "Church Sranan," through their religious texts, dictionaries, and language manuals. [3] This 2002 New Testament represents a modern translation building on that centuries-long tradition of Sranan Scripture.
