Samtao — Palaung (Pulang) Scripture Portions (Myanmar)
Overview
Samtao is a scripture portion in the Samtao (Pulang) language of northern Shan State, Myanmar, published by Dhamma Mate Swe Association (DMS) and available via YouVersion/Bible.com (ID 4172). The community's autonym Pulang (also Palaung or De'ang) identifies a Palaungic Mon-Khmer people known throughout Shan State as skilled cultivators of high-altitude tea. Samtao is one of several Palaung varieties distinguished by Ethnologue within the Palaung dialect cluster; the broader Palaung (De'ang) community numbers over 100,000 in Myanmar, with related communities in Yunnan Province, China, where the same people are called De'ang. This translation is part of DMS's collection of minority language scripture portions for Myanmar's diverse highland communities.
Language and People
Samtao (ISO 639-3: stu; autonym: Pulang / Palaung) is an Austroasiatic language: Austroasiatic → Mon-Khmer → Palaungic branch. The Palaungic branch includes multiple varieties spoken in northern Shan State and adjacent parts of Yunnan, China: Pale Palaung (Pale), Rumai Palaung (Rumai), Shwe Palaung (Shwe), and Samtao — all sharing Mon-Khmer grammatical structure and lexicon. The Palaung are related to the Wa (also Palaungic Mon-Khmer) in the same region. "Samtao" distinguishes this specific variety from the closely related Pale and Rumai Palaung; all Palaung varieties are classified by ISO with separate codes reflecting meaningful communicative differences.
The Samtao/Pulang community inhabits:
- Northern Shan State, Myanmar — particularly in the hills and plateaus of the Namhsan / Hsipaw area
- High-altitude terrain at approximately 1,000–1,800 m elevation, in the hills where tea cultivation is the primary cash crop
- Closely related communities in Yunnan Province, China (called De'ang)
Estimated speakers: smaller subset of the broader Palaung (De'ang) community (~100,000+ total Palaung in Myanmar and China; Samtao specifically is a sub-variety with fewer speakers).
Cultural Context
The Palaung (Pulang / De'ang) are famous throughout Shan State for their tea cultivation — the hills around Namhsan and Hsipaw are major tea-producing zones, and the Palaung are the primary growers. Palaung women are known for their distinctive metal neck rings (a different tradition from the more famous Kayan "long-neck" rings). The Palaung are predominantly Buddhist, with a small Christian minority. DMS (Dhamma Mate Swe Association) works among Myanmar's highland minority communities to provide scripture in heart-language varieties.
Publishing and Organizations
Published by Dhamma Mate Swe Association (DMS), a Myanmar-based Christian organization that has produced a systematic collection of scripture portions for Myanmar's minority ethnic and language communities.
