Suena New Testament (SUEWBT)
Overview
The Suena New Testament was published in 1978 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, making it one of the earlier New Testament translations completed for a Papua New Guinea language. [1] The translation was produced by SIL linguist Darryl Wilson and his wife, who began systematic documentation of the Suena language in the 1960s, publishing the first phonological analysis in 1969 and a comprehensive grammar in 1974. [2] Suena is a Papuan language of the Trans-New Guinea phylum, specifically the Binanderean subgroup, and is the northernmost member of that language family, spoken by approximately 3,600 people along the coast near the Waria watershed in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. [1] [2] Old Testament translation work is now being undertaken by the PNG Bible Translation Association, with consultant checking of Genesis chapters completed in 2024. [3]
