Sunwar Bible (SUZWBT)

Overview

The Sunwar Bible is a complete Bible translation in the Sunwar (Sunuwar) language, a Kiranti language of the Sino-Tibetan family spoken by approximately 38,000-40,000 people in eastern Nepal, primarily in the Dolakha and Ramechhap districts of the Janakpur zone and the Okhaldhunga district of the Sagarmatha zone [1][2]. The translation was completed in 2011 and published by Wycliffe Bible Translators in cooperation with Ekta Books Distributors, Kathmandu [3]. Scripture portions in Sunwar were first published in 1988, followed by the New Testament in 1992, building toward the complete Bible published in 2011 [4]. The Sunwar people, known as Koinch in their own language, are one of the Kiranti ethnic groups indigenous to the eastern hills of Nepal, and the translation uses the Devanagari script, which is the primary writing system for the language [1][2]. This Bible represents a significant resource for the Sunwar-speaking Christian community, which constitutes a small minority among a predominantly Hindu population [4].
