Samo, Maya (San Maya) is a Gur language of the Samo branch spoken by approximately 78,000 people in the north-central provinces of Burkina Faso, primarily in Sourou, Yatenga, and Zondoma. It is closely related to but distinct from San Matya (Northern Samo). The New Testament was translated by the Association Nationale pour le Traduction de la Bible et l'Alphabétisation (ANTBA), the national Bible translation organization of Burkina Faso established with SIL support in 1989 and officially recognized by the government in 1992. ANTBA produced the San Maya and San Matya New Testaments as a paired adaptation project — their 9th and 10th translation editions — representing seventeen years of sustained effort by translator teams and dedicated to communities that had no scripture in their mother tongue. The dedication ceremony was held in Ouagadougou on May 4, 2024. An audio recording of the New Testament is made available through Faith Comes By Hearing's Bible.is platform.
