Themne (Timne) Bible (Portions) (TEMBSL)
Overview
The Themne New Testament is a translation of the New Testament into the Temne language, published in 1993 by the Bible Society in Sierra Leone. Temne is one of the two largest languages of Sierra Leone (alongside Mende) and is spoken primarily in the Northern Province. [1] Bible translation work in Temne dates to the mid-nineteenth century through the Church Missionary Society (CMS). The German missionary C. F. Schlenker pioneered the study of the Temne language, publishing a Temne grammar and a collection of Temne traditions, fables, and proverbs with English translations in 1861. [2] Schlenker collaborated with John Mankah, a Temne man associated with the CMS mission in Port Loko from 1878 to 1896, in translating portions of the Bible into Temne. [3] The 1993 edition published by the Bible Society in Sierra Leone represents the continuation of these translation efforts into the modern era.
