Tembo (Abatwa Tembo, also Litembo or Motembo) is a Bantu language spoken in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a region that experienced sustained conflict throughout the First and Second Congo Wars and their aftermath. A New Testament translation in Tembo was completed after more than twenty years of work by The Word For The World (TWFTW), with the dedication of the Tembo New Testament taking place in 2017. Translators Jon and Cindi Hampshire spent two decades working alongside the Tembo community through conditions of severe insecurity, relocating their office to Goma at points due to conflict in the surrounding area. TWFTW Zambia and TWFTW USA jointly hold the copyright for the translation. An audio recording of the New Testament, including Genesis, has been made available through Faith Comes By Hearing's Bible.is platform, giving the Tembo community a spoken scripture resource that does not require literacy to access.
