Ubir Bible (UBRTBL)

Overview

The Ubir Bible contains the New Testament and Genesis in the Ubir language of Papua New Guinea, first published in 1997 with a revised edition in 2011 [1]. Ubir (also known as Kubiri) is an Oceanic Austronesian language spoken by approximately 5,200 people in the Tufi district of Oro Province and parts of Milne Bay Province, along the Collingwood Bay coast and Kwagila River [2]. The translation was carried out by the Papua New Guinea Bible Translation Association (BTA), with Duncan Kasokason completing the New Testament in his own mother tongue in 1997 [3]. After finishing the Ubir translation, Kasokason became the first locally-trained translation consultant for the BTA, going on to provide consultant-checking support to at least 25 other language teams across Papua New Guinea and beyond since 2002 [3]. The vernacular title, "God An Dura Bobaibasit Boboun," reflects the translation's significance as the first Scripture in the Ubir language [1].
