The New Testament in Urat (URTWBT)

Overview

The New Testament in Urat was published in 2016 by Wycliffe Bible Translators, with earlier Scripture portions having been available since 1993 [1]. Urat (also known as Wasep or Wusyep) is a Torricelli language of the Palei branch, spoken in the Dreikikir district of East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, southwest of Wom and south of Kombio [2]. The language has four regional dialects: North Urat (Wasep Ngau), Central Urat (Wusyep Yihre), South Urat (Wasep Yam), and East Urat (Wusyep Tep), with a total speaker population of approximately 12,000 [2]. Unusually for a Papuan language, Urat features four voiceless liquids and semivowels in its phonological inventory [3]. The vernacular title "Wusyep Bwore tikin Got" identifies the translation as God's Word in the Wusyep language.
